There are a number of yard and garden elements that provide height.  Some of the more obvious of these might include trees, fences, decks, and tall shrubs.  However, all of these garden elements have one thing in common: they are permanent.  While it is important and often times necessary to have these types of structures, sometimes it’s better to have the option to move your vertical garden elements around, as needed.  In this article, we’ll explore four non-permanent vertical elements that you can use to spice up your garden or landscape.

#1 – Hanging Baskets
Hanging baskets are one of the easiest ways to add a vertical element to your garden, plus they have the benefit of being mobile.  Most homeowners who do any type of outdoor planting will find themselves using hanging baskets at some point.  They come in many varieties, colors and materials to compliment your decor.  Most common are the free hanging baskets that allow flowers to drape down all sides as well as up the hanger.  By moving your hanging baskets around, you can easily provide a splash of color to a specific area of your yard or garden at any time throughout the growing season.

#2 – Trellises
Trellises have been long been used as a vertical garden element, giving support to climbing vines and flowers and providing elevated color on sides of structures.  Garden trellises are also available in varying sizes, shapes, colors and materials.  Depending on the type of climbing plants you use, trellises can be moved around from year to year as your landscape design changes.  Trellises with flowers in full bloom make a spectacular privacy barrier.  Another option for portable garden trellises would be to place a smaller trellis in a pot or planter base, creating a movable vertical structure for your deck or patio.

#3 – Obelisks
Obelisks are another type of trellis, usually in a tall, slender pyramidal shape.  These unique structures create a look all their own in a landscape.  Because they resemble a piece of artwork by themselves, obelisks can provide visual interest in a garden even without the addition of a flowering vine.  However, when an obelisk and a great climbing plant are paired together, it can create a real show stopper in your landscape.  Obelisks are another garden element that can be placed in a pot or planter, and then moved around through the growing season.

#4 – Arbors
Arbors are another way of giving your garden height.  These large garden structures can be the focal point of a landscape, or they can be used as a welcoming entrance.  While many arbors are permanent structures, either set into cement, or staked firmly to the ground, this doesn’t have to always be the case.  Many arbors are now available with footed bases that can rest, freestanding, on a deck, patio, or sidewalk.  Usually some large and heavy object must be placed on top of the base, to weight the arbor down and prevent it from blowing over in strong winds.  A large potted plant would be an excellent choice for this purpose.

No matter what your choices are for your garden or landscape, using vertical elements is a good way to add structure and visual interest to an area.  And more specifically, when your vertical elements can be easily moved and repositioned as needed, it’s easy to keep your yard and garden looking its best at all times.  With the large array of vertical garden products available today, your perfect landscape design is limited only by your imagination.

Ever tried to play two or three notes together on a piano and realized that some groups of notes sound better than others? This isn’t a random pairing of notes, certain intervals – or the spaces between keys on a piano – sound better than others due to the combination of vibrations from both keys. Although this is seen better on pianos than on other instruments, the same principles apply to all objects that are pitched, including windchimes. Windchimes are typically used as a garden accessory, hung from a porch and allowing the wind to pass through it. As you can see from watching windchimes, whenever the wind passes through, the center ball hits the tubes or rods of a windchime. And, in addition, you’ll notice that the rods are of different shapes – much like the strings inside a piano when you look inside.

If you put these two images together, the ball in a windchime acts much like the hammers in a piano but, instead of one hammer per string, the one ball in a windchime hits multiple rods. This ball, called a clapper, is suspended from a larger disc, as are all rods or tubes in a set of windchimes. The clapper is spaced from the tubes so that it can only hit one two tubes at a time, as a set of three notes – unless spaced to sound like a major or minor chord – will be dissonant. And who wants to listen to dissonant music coming from his or her garden?

The tubes on a windchime are arranged to harmonious pitch groups, with six to eight tubes pitched like major, minor, or pentatonic chords. However, no precise measurements exist for forming a set of windchimes, as the thickness of the rods and the materials used vary with how a pitch will sound when the tube is hit by a clapper. Copper is the common material for many windchimes, as it makes a softer sound. Other somewhat common materials for a set of windchimes include steel and aluminum alloys, although both of these tend to make sharper-sounding – in quality, not pitch – tones. In addition, for additional tones, the texture of the clapper can vary the sound, with a hard clapper producing harsher tones and soft ones more rounded notes.

Although experimentation as to the length of the tubes to form pitch varies, once all parts of a windchime are assembled, the sounds that come out of the tubes are as harmonious or as dissonant as those on a piano or other keyboard instruments.

Harbor Breeze Ceiling Fans are the Lowe’s made brand of ceiling fan and can be found strictly at any Lowe’s store in your city. When you are looking for a ceiling fan, it is important to make sure that you are getting a high quality fan at a great price. Going with the Lowe’s brand ensures that the quality and price will be some of the best, and it also allows you the ease of mind of knowing that you have a decent return policy.

As with any home improvement purchase, you only want to spend the money if it will improve the overall value of your home. Ceiling fans are a great way to increase your homes appeal as well as value. This is due to the benefits they offer any home owner. The major benefit a ceiling fan can offer is the energy efficiency they provide. A home’s power bill can get outrageous, especially in the summer months. This is due to the constant use of the air conditioning. A ceiling fan allows you to turn the air conditioning off and seriously decrease your energy consumption, while still keeping your rooms at a comfortable temperature.

The other major benefit of a ceiling fan is the aesthetic appeal. Many homeowners will automatically know that a ceiling fan can lower their energy use. They will take this into consideration when they look at a home to purchase. But, subconsciously, they also are more attracted to a room when a ceiling fan is present. Harbor Breeze Ceiling Fans are great when it comes to this aspect as they all have very aesthetically pleasing designs, but are still cost effective.

A ceiling fan can boost the overall appeal of your house and also save you money on your power bill. When looking for a ceiling fan you want to make sure that the brand you choose is of a high quality and is a price that you can afford. I recommend that if you don’t know how to install one (as it can be a difficult install due to the wiring required), that you look into purchasing installation when you buy your ceiling fan. Most major retailers have an installation service for as little as $50.

If you are looking to increase your energy efficiency, I would also recommend looking into energy efficient light bulbs. Light bulbs have come a long way in the last few years and you can now get bulbs that use half the wattage of previous generation that will last up to 5 years with average use. This can also greatly decrease your power bill. There are a lot of ways to increase the energy efficiency of your home and lowering the overall power bill is a great investment. It will make your home more appealing once you get ready to sell and in this current market, any improvement is a good one.

Despite all of the new technology available in today’s computer driven world, one of the most popular and overlooked additions to any home is the ceiling fan. Ceiling fans have been in use for over a century and provided added value to your home, energy efficiency, and just plain feel nice when it’s warm outside.

Due to the longevity in the market, you can now find ceiling fans in all shapes, sizes, colors, materials, and designs. Oft times, the hardest part can be finding one that fits your particular style and designs tastes. The best ceiling fans available today are going to have much better motors, durability, finishes, and materials than those that were available in the past. Because of this, if your home is older, you might want to look into replacing your ceiling fans with newer and more efficient and appealing models.

One common mistake is that ceiling fans are not worth your while if you live in a colder climate. While it is true that a ceiling fan offers a very large benefit in a warm climate, it can also help a great deal in a colder climate or during the winter. Most fans have a method of setting the blades to spin in reverse order. This allows you to push the warm air that rises naturally, back down into the room. During the winter, this will allow you to re-circulate the heat and keep your room a more comfortable temperature.

In the summer, a ceiling fan can help keep your room nice and cool. If your air conditioning is set to 78 degrees, a fan can make that 78 degrees feel like 74, and it does it for pennies a day. For me personally, the sound a ceiling fan can also cause a calming effect. It reminds me of my grandmother’s house and helps me to relax when I am sitting around the house.

One problem that keeps many people from purchasing ceiling fans is the complicated wiring and installation that is required. Most ceiling fans have pull chords for both the light fixture and the fan itself. Both need to be wired correctly in order for them to work from the same light switch or separate ones if you are lucky enough to have two. There is an easy solution however as most retailers that sell ceiling fans also offer an installation option for an added fee.

Ceiling fans can help you relax, save you money on your air conditioning and heating bill, and also improve the look of any room. They have come a long way in the last century but are still a great addition to any home. If you were waiting to take the plunge in buying and installing a ceiling fan, wait no more. Now is the perfect time to make such an addition to your home.
