Rainwater Collection in modern urban areas is something that is still new and at its infancy in many respects but with many areas these days experiencing changing climates the installation of rainwater collection systems is now becoming more popular.

The biggest question for many home owners is how to go about implementing rainwater collection and what type of rainwater collection system to install. There are many types on the market but broadly speaking you can divide rainwater collection systems into above ground and below ground systems.

When making your choice there is much to consider. Below ground rainwater collection systems are obviously the most efficient at collecting as much rainwater as possible. The fact that the inlet to the tank is below ground level allows rainwater to be diverted easily by the use of gravity from all of the roof area, thus maximising the rainwater collection potential of your roof. Despite being very efficient, below ground rainwater collection systems can be expensive to install. Installation costs include excavating the site and lack of access to existing residences can make these systems prohibitive to many houses.

Above ground rainwater collection systems are entirely different. These consist of rainwater tanks made of from plastic, concrete, stainless steel and timber, etc, etc. Set up costs for above ground rainwater collection systems are typically viable to more households. In most cases all that’s required to start with is to connect a rainwater tank to a downspout, then connect an overflow, add a pump and then sit back and start collecting rainwater. Rainwater collection using this method can be limiting, unless you live in a very high rainfall area as rainwater collection from just one downspout typically doesn’t yield large quantities of rainwater.

Therefore it appears as if both of the above mentioned rainwater collection methods do have their advantages but also their limitations. The obvious solution to the problem is to take the above ground rainwater collection system which is more cost effective to install and then adapt it so that it can collect rainwater from as much of the roof area as possible.

A rainwater collection system that has this ability is very important so as to make it viable and efficient. During times when rainfall is abundant collecting rainwater from one downspout may be sufficient but during hotter, drier times collecting as much rainwater as possible then becomes more important. Having the ability to connect adjacent downpipes to the inlet of a rainwater tank can increase the rainwater collected by 200 to 300%.

Another feature of the above ground rainwater collection system is that it can be installed in stages. This means that if cost is an issue there is no need for one large initial outlay, thus making it a very viable option.

So for people interested in setting up their own rainwater collection system, above ground rainwater tanks can be a very cost effective option and when installed to collect as much rainwater as possible this type of rainwater collection system is also very effective.

I designed my own above ground rainwater collection system that cost me less than 4,500 AUD and now collects 75,000 litres or rainwater per year. Find out more about rainwater collection systems at my blog.

This plant, in some of its varieties, is probably the most popular ornament of the parlor. The ease of culture, its beautiful foliage, its rapid growth, and evergreen character all combine to make it a favorite.

The soil should be a rich loam; the richer the soil the more rapid will be the growth. Yet avoid stimulating manures. Slips root readily, taken off at any leaf joint, and placed either in earth or water; in the latter they will soon throw out roots, and may then be transferred to pots.

The only precaution to be taken in growing ivy is to keep it from frost while in growth and if frozen, to keep the sun away from it, thawing it out with cold water from whatever garden water feature (http://www.garden-fountains.com/Detail.bok?no=2922) you possess. In summer the plants may be set out of doors, and will make vigorous growth.

There are many species, of which the most common is Hedera Helix, the common twining ivy, a native of Europe, of which there are many varieties. The leaves of these varieties vary quite a bit and many distinctions have been founded on these variations.

There are two very beautiful kinds, the silver and golden, the foliage being beautifully variegated with white and gold. The Tree or Aborescent Ivy is merely a form of the common variety, which is shown by its returning to the primal Aborescent form not infrequently. The leaves are entire, and the plant often, retains its form for years.

H. Roegneriana is a variety with large, heart-shaped leaves, which is much esteemed.

H. digitata, the palmate or hand-shaped Ivy is a pretty variety, of rapid growth; the leaves are small, dark, and veined. This is often called, erroneously, the Irish Ivy.

H. Canariensis is the Irish, or Giant Ivy, the leaves are five-lobed, and larger than those of the common ivy. This type of ivy may not be best for areas where patio statuary (http://www.garden-fountains.com/Detail.bok?no=3416) is on display since it can grow quite large and overshadow the statues.

Almost all the varieties of nurserymen’s’ catalogs are merely forms of these, with peculiar foliage.

The Golden Ivy is a splendid plant; when the young
leaves come out it resembles a mass of yellow flowers. Ivies are grown in hanging baskets, around windows, made to trail around picture frames and looking glasses; indeed, they may be made decorative in the highest degree.

The plants should always be well supplied with water, though it should never be allowed to stand at the roots. Large plants of the common varieties may be procured inexpensively. The ornamental foliaged varieties are somewhat pricier.

If you have ivy growing out of doors (and it will thrive if you keep the winter’s sun away from it), a pretty effect may be produced by cutting large branches, and keeping them in vases or outdoor fountains of rain water. They will grow well all winter, and planted in spring make nice plants for autumn.

The plant commonly known as German Ivy is not an ivy; the botanical name is Senecio Scandens. It is deservedly popular, from its rapid growth and its freedom from insects. The Coliseum Ivy is a species of Snap-dragon, as may be seen from an examination of the flowers, and a very pretty plant it is; botanically it is Linaria Cymbalaria.

Five-leaved Ivy is the Virginia Creeper or Woodbine (Ampelopsis Virginica), a native of our woods. The Poison Ivy is Rhus Radicans or Rhus Toxicodendron, and not of the same family as any of the above.

Taking on the task of installing your own laminate flooring is not always as easy as you think.

Diy laminate installation can save some expense of having new floors, this is usually the motivation for the diy. There can be a steep learning curve here.So learning how to fix some of the problems that may arise when installing laminate flooring can be very beneficial for the do it yourselfer.

Laminate flooring is one of the easier floors for a home owner to installcompared to carpet, vinyl or hardwood. However for anyone attempting to install this flooring, you should have as much information as possible. This can help eliminate problems that may pop up in the middle of the project.

Installing a laminate floor incorrectly can look unsightly.Purchasing a poor quality flooring can be costly in the long run.Knowing a good quality flooring can save a lot of grief.

Manufacturers advertised a lot in the past, claiming laminate is very easy to install. As far as connecting the planks together this can vary in difficultly. It depends on the locking system.( the part that holds the planks together)There are a lot of different locking systems that hold the planks together. Some allow the planks to be tapped together laying flat on the floor, which is much more DIY friendly.Others require one plank to be tilted up at an angle in order to lock them together. This can make it difficult especially when installing up to door jambs. They didn’t talk a lot about some things that need to be addressed, such as floor preparation, under cutting door jambs or installing transitions just to mention a few.Undercutting door jambs can be done with a door jamb hand sawthat can be purchased at the big box stores for about $15.00If you have a lot of door jambs you may consider using an electric jamb saw. They can be expensive to purchase but may be rented.

Transitions are used where the laminate flooring endsat doors or carpet or ceramic tile.Transition molds need to be considered before you beginto assure the placement is correct.Installing a transition to a surface that may be a differentheight then the laminate flooring can also be difficult.

A hotly debated topic among bonsai followers is about soil. While watering is vital to the care of bonsai trees, so too is the type of soil as the soil is involved in delivering nutrients to the tree.

With the care of bonsai trees, we are trying to keep the tree small and the root system shallow, so we need to use a different composition of soil than that of an ordinary house plant.

We want our house plants to grow larger and to do this, they require their root systems to become deeply established so that they can retain as much water as possible for growth. Potting soil is heavy and can stay damp for a long time. If we were to use this ‘heavy’, water retaining, soil for our small trees with their shallow roots, rot will start to set in.

There are so many types of soil specially for bonsai trees. Bonsai generally need a loose fast-draining soil – but again it depends on your type of tree, its pot and where it is sited.

With bonsai soil, you must look for two things. The first is whether it will retain water properly and absorb nutrients from the air around it. Bonsai trees are very sensitive towards moisture and need gases in order to survive.

The second most important quality that you should look for in bonsai soil is that it will drain water quickly. If the soil retains too much moisture then the roots will be subject to rot which will kill your tree very quickly.

While all bonsai soil will do essentially the same thing, some soil mixtures differ in their composition which will have an effect on the way that they work. Some will have more nutrients and some will have less. Again it is important to know what type of tree you have to you can ensure it’s potted in the right soil for your specific plant so you should investigate the needs of your individual bonsai before making a choice.

Generally speaking, experts on the care of bonsai trees recommend a mix of around 30 percent sandy grit and 70 percent humus for deciduous trees and vice verse for evergreen needle plants.

There are many premixed soil solutions that you can purchase that will cater to the needs of your tree.

To make sure that I was getting relevant information for my particular plant, I took a visit the nursery where my plant had come from to ask for some help on the proper care of bonsai trees. I was told that due to the shallow root system of a bonsai, it is important that the tree receives adequate amounts of air circulation via free drainage, while at the same time retains enough moisture and nutrients necessary for growth and good health.

They told me that the secret in the care of bonsai trees is in providing the right amount of water, air, nutrients and light. Bonsai comes in several varieties and each has different requirements in terms of these vital ingredients.

So for the present time, I decided that I am staying with the pre-mix solution from my local nursery. After all, the tree has remained alive and well in their care – up to the time I got it. They seem to be a decent quality and its saves me from having to work out the percentages and materials required to mix my own.

When I have learnt more about more about the care of bonsai trees, I intend to take a more "hands on" approach and mix my own.

But for the present – the pre-mix will be fine for my bonsai tree.
