A small garden that is overcrowded with shrubs may leave no space for comfortable outdoor relaxation. Furthermore, this tends to detract from any view that may exist.
You can solve this problem by clearing the clutter, providing clean lines and shifting focus to a picturesque view.
Let’s say we have a small 25 by 50 foot space. We can begin by removing the plantings that are crowding our space and then elevating the patio at the rear. Low walls accentuate the area and can be used as seating when entertaining guests. By doing this we can eliminate the need for bulky furniture- really opening up the space.
Fashion a 10 to 15 foot long pond to serve as the centerpiece of your space and pave the area with gravel. Then, frame the perimeter with shrubs that are maintained with minimal care and use small trees that won’t obstruct your new, gorgeous view.
When dressing a small garden, remember to maximize the details. Use quality materials, accessories and small plants.
Boring walls can be brought to life by adding vines. For instance, a Boston ivy’s foliage transitions from yellow to orange then to red. Through each transition your walls will look new and enjoy added style and character.
A great choice for any tight space is to give your pots a streamlined look by choosing an attractive container for a single shrub. Place a container that matches your wall’s hue as a shrub border. For example, create a water-filled birdbath that not only looks nice but will actually draw birds that will add beauty in sight and sound to your garden.
Small trees like the “Butterfly” that grows up to 7 feet should be used to accent your garden. These trees, which have small bluish greens leaves with a white edge, make a charming addition. So if you are thinking about redoing your garden remember that you can do it for a lot less than expected.

For the best return on an investment, bathrooms are a great choice when it comes to remodeling. Think about it. How important is the look of your bathroom to you? Potential buyers are going to feel the same way about it.
Although we would all like to upgrade the look of our bathrooms, the cost is often a huge deterrent. IF you are looking to make a change, here are a few bathroom ideas that may fit your budget.
Sometimes old tile can give away the age of your bathroom. Simply paint it; go with white and paint the grout lines as well. To save money, have the tub painters also handle this paint job.
Redoing the floors may be easiest and cheapest by ripping them out and retiling. However, because bathroom floors are small, this should not take much effort. Hardwood floors are popular but are not practical because of all the moisture. However, you can cover old tile with wood grain strips of vinyl. If your current tile is well-laid, the strips can be added directly on top.
A great way to make your room feel cozier is to use wood or laminate on the ceiling. An unsightly ceiling can be covered over easily with such materials and as an added bonus; you can frame a mirror with the leftovers.
The big thing right now is using furniture as a bathroom vanity. Customizing a console or a dresser adds a very charming touch to a bathroom making it feel high-end. Simply make a sink and countertop choice and let your contractor handle the assembly work.
Finally, pay special attention to your shower and it will pay off. Go ahead and splurge here. Repaint and get a new shower curtain and towels to top it off. An eggshell finish is best and to make the job easier, use paints and primers in one can.

You need not be disappointed year after year the look of your lawn. By changing the way you think about your lawn you can develop an action plan for maintaining it. Your lawn is like a crop that is harvested each week. With proper nutrition, water and care you’ll see great results.
Early in the spring, start with a pH test in order to determine the acid or alkaline level of the soil; a level of 6.5 is ideal. It may be necessary to decrease the soil’s acidity by raising the pH. This can be done by applying lime. Next, enrich the soil with a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. Spreading a pre-emergent herbicide will help to contain and eradicate weed problems before they start – corn gluten meal serves as both a fertilizer and weed suppressor.
Be sure to always sweep chemicals from the pavement when you are done using. This will keep harmful chemicals form making their way to pollute water. Also check with a nursery for help in timing applications correctly, particularly of herbicides. A great indicator that soil temperature is on the rise is to watch for blooming forsythias in your neighborhood. This means weeds will be germinating soon and the time has come to spread fertilizer with pre-emergent. You do not want to lay down grass seed for a month or so allowing for the herbicide to lose its kick. Alternatively, you may choose to spread seed in the fall instead.
In most of the country it is a good idea to pass fertilizer a second time at the end of summer or early in the fall. Make a final application in late fall or early winter, before any freezing occurs. This will give your lawn a head start in the spring. Unless you live in a very warm region, take a break during the winter.
Final cuts:
- Use four to six inches of topsoil
- For healthy roots, the grass leaf must be tall enough to push photosynthesis
- For cool regions, blends of fescue with Kentucky bluegrass are nice, or try other blends with perennial rye.
- Set sharp mower blades to the right height to reduce damage to leaf tips
