Is your wife still bugging you about how small the kitchen is?  Does she keep reminding you that kitchen remodeling adds more value to the house than any other remolding project?  Did you discover that your favorite magnetic calendar is missing from the refrigerator door and in its place there is a card for a remodeling contractor?

Enough is enough.  You are going to make that kitchen bigger and you are going to do it without knocking down a single wall or ripping out a single cabinet.  You are going to apply the Bernie Maddof School of Decorating technique and simply distract the eye of the beholder from the real truth.  You are going to amaze your wife and you are going to do all this for than hiring a contractor.

Think about it for a minute.  You know that space, and how you perceive it, is affected by the environment within that space.  For example at work, if your desk is cluttered with paper and cups holding pens and stuff then the desk looks small.  On those rare occasions when your desk is clean, nothing on top to distract the eye, it looks like an aircraft carrier.  The same principal can apply to the kitchen.

Before you do anything, survey the kitchen and identify what you can do to make it be perceived as bigger.

The first place to look is at the counters.  If there are appliances, knife rack, books, knickknacks, or my wife’s favorite, baskets; then you have the same clutter as the paper on your desk.

What color are the walls?  Are they wallpapered?   Do you have a bunch of stuff hanging on them?  Ideally you want a light color with no pattern.  Pale yellow or even certain shades of white will make a room look much larger.

Cabinets are the next feature of the kitchen that needs to be examined.  If you have a dark stain or dark painted finish, consider redoing them to a lighter color.

The biggest project in making a kitchen larger without making it larger is the floor.  The same principal applies here, light color and no pattern. If you’re not up to re-flooring, find some light colored throw rugs and use those.

So it comes down to this.  Organize your cabinets and get rid of the stuff you haven’t used in the last five years.  This will give you space to clear the counter tops of stuff you use everyday.  Slap some light colored paint on the walls and get rid of everything that has distracting patterns.  Do the same thing with your cabinets.  Lastly, make a decision about the flooring.  Either replace it with a single color material or throw down some light colored rugs.

Presto your kitchen is perceived to be a larger space and you can now take down the contractor’s card and slap your calendar back up.

Before you even go out and buy, cut down, or have delivered that cord of firewood, have your fireplace or woodstove checked out and make sure it is in great shape by a certified chimney specialist. This should be done every year.  It is just as important that you know you are burning the best possible fuel.  By choosing fuel correctly the risk is greatly reduced of having a fire anywhere else than in the fireplace. Split hardwood is the best choice.  Charcoal or coal is not appropriate and is risky to use.  Softwood can be used but the amount needed to heat is increased by the faster burn time than hardwood. This will result in buying more wood to use in your fireplace and the cost is going up every year.   Green or non-seasoned wood can be problematic, hard to start and cause smoking problems, odor problems, rapid creosote buildup and possibly even dangerous chimney fires. Your choice of fuel is where you can impact the performance of your heating.  Properly aged wood of the correct type will burn cleaner and more efficiently and you will need less of it.

The following chart helps to show the difference in wood species and their ability to produce heat as shown in the chart by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

While I like this chart, not all wood is available in all areas.  I would suggest contacting the State Forest Service in your area.  Also, county agents have great information for local wood and where to find it.  When buying consider cost and availably for your amount needed.  We use one and one-half to two cords of hard wood per season.  Not a great lot but I like to get the best deal for my money.  I have burned elm, walnut, oak, hickory, and pecan.  Red Oak definitely gave me my best cost to heating ratio.

A safety consideration is the storage of your firewood.  While this may seem somewhat simplistic, by using good practices your wood will be in good order and ready for easy usage.  The first temptation when it is being delivered is to have the wood dumped in the backyard somewhere and bring it into the house as needed.  The risk you run is of not knowing the true amount of product received.  Typically your wood provider will, for an additional fee, stack the wood.  This allows you to get a tape measure and pay for what you get.  I believe a courtesy to tell the provider that is how payment will be made.  Know what you are buying, a cord, a rick, or a face cord.   A cord is 4x4x8 foot.  A rick is understood as 2x4x8 foot or one-half of a cord.  A face cord has many possible meanings.  It still measures like a cord but the length of the wood cut varies, 12 to 18 inches in length. So the number of four foot high by four foot long stacks will change to the length of wood cut provided.  Just remember the stack should measure 128 cubic feet.   Define this prior to delivery.  This is a standard measurement in the industry.  Unstacked wood invites all sorts of unfriendly critters from snakes, spiders, and mice to even termites.  Stack the wood off the ground by simply turning wood pieces long ways and stacking the wood on top. Commercial log holders are available for sale made of pipe or angle steel.  If you are bringing in 2 to 3 cords use something easy like a t-post on each end to stack against.  Also for convenience use a log holder by the fireplace in the house.  Bring in an arm full, put it in the log holder and you will be good to go for the night.   Proper stacking will allow for good air circulation of the wood pile.  Also, use an inexpensive blue tarp to protect from rain or snow.

Have the fireplace or stove checked by a professional.  Use smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  Buy quality split seasoned wood, stack it and use log holders and enjoy a warm cup of cocoa in front of your beautiful fireplace.

More and more people are trying to conserve fuel and so are looking for alternative source of energy. The renewable source of energy is gaining popularity. All of are aware of the depleting source of energy. The present energy we use like petroleum products, water will finish soon if we don’t conserve them. We all are aware of the alternative source of energy that can be found. One such source of energy is the magnetic perpetual motion generator. The concept behind magnetic perpetual motion generator is gaining popularity as it will save us lots of money and will also conserve fuels.

The whole theory of the magnetic perpetual motion generator is founded on the implementation of magnets and the charge they have. This charge that they have helps in getting the continuous motion on the go. Constant motion is the movement of any object that moves incessantly without being supported by any external factors. Magnetic perpetual motion generator is the unsurpassed source to implement this continuous motion as they contain a high density of charge within them.

The most fascinating part of the continuous motion principle being used in a magnetic perpetual motion generator is that during this continuous motion, there is actually excess energy created and this excess energy can be made use of for household propose.

The magnetic perpetual motion generator does not require any external source from which it has to get its energy. The climatic conditions will not have any impact on the production of energy. They can be placed in any place. The building of this generator is easy and the tools and components used are easily available. You save money as this generator works constantly works without stopping at any point.

Have you been having dreams of being completely free from the utility companies? If you have been thinking that you might want to build wind and solar hybrid off grid system, then there are several considerations that you are going to want to evaluate very carefully. This is a big decision to make, but if you’re dedicated to it there is a lot of reward involved too.

This sort of jump is meant for the individuals that are absolutely committed to using the energy that they can produce on their own. This means some serious planning is involved. You need to think about how you will manage the energy consumption in your home. This is not an experiment to lower your bills, this is big and it is hard to go back on your decision once it is all in place.

Each system is going to be very specific to your home and your needs. Your current energy usage should be taken into account. You can obtain this information from your utility company if you are currently connected to one. There is also the size of your home, and the number of people in your family to consider. All in all, you end up with a very custom designed system.

You will still be able to use normal appliances. Make sure that as many of these appliances are energy conserving models as possible. You are acting as your own power company so you want to make every little bit of energy count.

Contrary to popular belief, these hybrid systems can be used anywhere, in any climate. The difference is what components of the system will depended on the most. This will also affect the design of the system itself.

There is plenty to consider when making this decision. This should be easy enough to do for the environmentally conscious person. In the end it will be worth it if you are dedicated to making it work.

Installing new vinyl siding on your home is a favorite for a  Grand Rapids remodeling project.  Instant curb appeal; this upgrade makes the home’s exterior virtually maintenance free for many years to come.  This remodeling project has an excellent return on dollars spent.  The vinyl siding can be purchased in a vast array of colors and styles that can transform your home.

Vinyl siding comes in a variety of styles, all of which mimic traditional wood lap siding.  The most common profile reproduced in vinyl siding is D4.  This means that there are two panels (double), each being 4″ (four) in width. There are variations in vinyl such as double 5″ (D5), triple 3″ (T3) and Dutch lap.  Whatever style you choose,, the total width of the panels should be taken into consideration when calculating how much material you will need

The sky is the limit when considering colors.  Virtually any color in the paint aisle can be found in vinyl siding.  When deciding on a color, it should be mentioned that darker colors generally will show fading more than a lighter tone. There can be variations within the same color choice; therefore it is advisable to order the material all at once rather than purchasing a little at a time.  There are also grain variations that manufacturers offer.  They vary from a deeply etched surface to a smooth texture.

Perhaps the most important feature of vinyl siding is the thickness, the thicker the better.  Premium gauge siding will weather the elements and lasts longer.  During installation, the 12 foot panels won’t crimp and bend over on itself with a thicker grade.  The gauge of the siding sold in common home improvement centers usually ranges from 0.40 to 0.45.  A midgrade should measure 0.50 and a premium grade should be around 0.55.   You’ll find the thickness is directly related to the cost.

Whatever you ultimately choose, vinyl siding is a popular Grand Rapids remodeling project due to the instant curb appeal.  The maintenance free properties of vinyl siding means the homeowner can throw away paint scrapers and brushes for the exterior of the home while enjoying a durable surface for years to come.
