Decorative wall tiles have been with us from the earliest days of human civilization. Some of the earliest examples of decorative wall tiles date back to Mesopotamia 4000 years ago and form the basis for the contemporary decorative tiles you find nowadays.

Decorative tile was perfected by the Persians, but didn't make it to Europe until the latter part of the 12th century. These hand painted decorative tiles showed up in Spain, Italy and France, and from these 3 cultural centers spread to the rest of Europe.

As with most of the guilds during this period, the processes for making these hand painted tiles were carefully guarded secrets passed down verbally from one generation to the next. Consequently we have little in the way of recorded history about these techniques.

During this time, many processes and techniques emerged to create pictures, figures and patterns on tile. These including glazed clay, encaustic or inlaid clay, mosaic stone, mosaic clay tiles, hand painted tiles, carved and formed tiles, sgraffito (scratched tiles), metallic overlays and transfer printing.

These methods are all used to make decorative tiles today, and decorative tiles (also known as art tiles) have become the fastest growing trend in tile design and are as coveted my 21st century designers and customers as they were valued by our ancestors.

Today's innovative tile makers continue to evolve the craft of making decorative tile through the use of new materials and techniques. Modern day consumers will find an array of tiles made of metal (bronze, copper, pewter, aluminum and steel), glass (mosaics, stamped and formed), wood (bamboo, reclaimed teak etc), and stone (carved, painted and mosaic).

" target="_blank">Oregano herb was unheard of in the United States, and in most parts of the world, until after World War II, when returning soldiers came back with an appetite for the "pizza herb". Oregano at that time, and even up to this day, was a staple pizza ingredient in Italy. However, the herb did not originate in Italy.

It was the Greeks who first cultivated and used oregano for culinary and medicinal applications. They even regard it as "panakes" or a cure-all herb because of its wonderful antiseptic and healing properties. They also use oregano leaves when making wreaths to hail and honor their gods and goddesses, and to celebrate joyous occasions such weddings, childbirth and victories. Oregano is also offered to the graves to bring peace to the souls of their departed loved ones.

According to Greek mythology, it was Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who created the herb to give happiness to mankind. It then became a symbol of joy for the Greeks. The word oregano came from two Greek words (oros meaning mountain and ganos meaning joy) which when combined literally means "joy of the mountain". It was also associated with Artemis, the goddess of childbirth. Hence, women in labor would often be seen wearing wreaths made of oregano for protection and safe delivery.

True to its name, oregano is often seen in ancient Greece as the bright and seemingly happy herb plants growing alongside hills and mountains. But it served another purpose there, because the Greeks believed that livestock such as horses, goats and sheep feeding on oregano leaves yield tastier and more tender meats. Another reason to be happy, it seems.

The popularity of the oregano herb spread throughout the Mediterranean region such as Turkey, Sicily and Spain. When the Romans conquered the Greeks, they found oregano in most Grecian homes. They instantly fell over the new flavor that this herb offers and incorporated it in their cooking. They used it to flavor meats and fishes. Italian dishes involves a lot of sauces, and since oregano goes so well with tomato, cheese and egg-based dishes, it wasn't surprising that the herb will became an essential part of the Italian culinary.

They also discovered its medicinal value and used it as a cure for toothaches, indigestion and diarrhea, cough and colds, fever and rheumatism. With the expanding Roman Empire, oregano's fame and its many uses and applications, easily spread throughout Europe and most part of Northern Africa. It is also believed to have reached China during the Medieval ages, where it also became a favored herb for cooking and a potent ingredient in many oriental drugs and medicines.

Today, oregano herb has sprouted different plant varieties, each offering its own distinct flavors and aroma. To name a few, we have the Cretan, Golden, Italian, Sycilian, Syrian, Sweet Marjoram, Hot and Spicy, Mexican and so on. Each nation seems to have its own type of oregano. It only goes to prove how beneficial and useful are the properties of these wonderful herb.

Moroccan tile products are traditionally used in all kinds of living spaces. If you have ever stayed at a Riad in Marrakech or a Kasbah in the Atlas Mountains for example, than chances are that you have seen first hand how many possible applications there are for these types of products. One can literally find them in every room imaginable. One of the reasons why Moorish zillij tiles are so widespread in Morocco and other Arabic countries certainly has to do with their aesthetic qualities and their historic significance. However, there are also several practical reasons, including insulation, fortification, and cleanliness.

The overall climate in Morocco can be described as very hot and dry. In this sense it is sort of like living in Arizona or California, minus air-conditioning in most cases. Therefore, Moroccans go to great lengths to achieve hospitable room temperatures when building and designing their homes. Insulating floors and walls thoroughly, among other things, is of utmost importance. A zillij tile installation will add a layer of several centimeters to the surface it is applied to, thereby aiding in keeping interiors cool in the summertime. With rising energy costs and increasing efforts towards more environmental sustainability, people in other countries are also starting to choose building materials in more conscious ways.

Fortification still plays an important role today. Even though the more violent times in Moroccan history, such as tribal wars and the spread of the Moorish Empire are long gone, the sense of being able to find refuge in one's own four walls from the oftentimes tumultuous outside world remains very much alive. A solidly built structure also shields against noise and creates tranquility and a laid back atmosphere on the inside, which is something Moroccans in particular appreciate. Finally, people in this part of the world value durability and longevity. A home with a strong foundation and proper fortifications will not only weather any sand storm, but it will also be there for future generations to enjoy. To this day the Alhambra and Alcazar palaces in Spain serve as artistic monuments of the Moors, housing mosaic creations from the 14th Century that are still perfectly intact.

For cultural and religious reasons cleanliness is of the highest order in this part of the world. Spaces covered with Moroccan tiles are generally easy to clean and maintain. The glaze is water resistant and, therefore, makes these surfaces easy to wipe. Moroccans, just like Turks and other Muslims, like to frequent hammams, which are public baths, where people go to deep-cleanse. The idea is that spiritual purity starts with physical purity. Coincidentally, in many cases these hammams are also outfitted with beautiful tile work. Today there is a growing trend among sophisticated Westerners to turn ordinary bathrooms into cozy hammams.

With Moroccan zillij tiles there is a lot more than initially meets the eye. It might be hard to look past the stunning appearance and the hypnotizing patterns, but if one does one will discover that this type of product serves many very practical purposes.

In appearance Cork flooring looks very little like the corks you find in wine bottles. Cork flooring can be found in hues from the lightest ash to the darkest chocolate brown with a lot of texture choices available as well. Cork flooring is considered to be as durable as most hardwoods, and is in a similar price range.

Cork tiles help hold in heat, reducing energy bills, and the slight give they retain even after finishing means they are comfortable to walk on, very easy on the back and legs, making it a great choice for the kitchen, where many of us spend so much time on our feet.

So Cork is a wonderfully eco-friendly choice for flooring but, as it comes from the Cork Oak tree, you may be wondering how that could be? Surely these trees have to be felled and what is so green about that? However, that is not the case, the Cork is harvested from the trees rather than having to chop them down and no harm at all comes to the trees themselves.

The Cork Oak is found all over the Mediterranean, most especially in Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Morocco, France, Italy and Tunisia. Rather than being felled, which is in fact illegal in many of these countries, the Cork Oak is "farmed" to provide the raw material necessary for making cork flooring.

Cork harvesting involves no machinery; it is performed by the skilled hands of humans instead. Only the bark of the cork tree is removed by several sets of highly skilled hands per tree, generally using only small axes and an awful lot of expertise. The bark regrows quickly, which is why cork is such an incredible renewable resource. On average, the Cork Oak tree has a lifespan of 150 to 250 years and it can be safely harvested up to twelve times during that period.

If you are thinking about adding new flooring to your home remodeling "to do" list and are also looking to go green, speak to your remodeling contractor about cork flooring as an alternative to more traditional materials. It may just add a whole new dimension to your home that you had not considered.
